In case you’re not familiar, Local Lift is an ongoing series I created at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. So many of our cherished local businesses had to suddenly close their doors or drastically change the way they did business, and this presented some major challenges (especially financial challenges) for business owners. With each Local Lift, I purchase gift cards from local Whidbey Island businesses to give away to locals. It’s meant to be a “small business boost,” and I also love shining the spotlight on some of my very favorite small businesses. When we can, I believe it’s important to support our local economy! #ShopLocal

The BBQ Joint
The BBQ Joint in Oak Harbor is now open for dine in, takeout, and curbside pickup! If you’re craving classic barbecue dishes, The BBQ Joint is a must-try spot—they even make all of their own rubs, sauces, side dishes, cornbread, and desserts. Their meat menu includes favorites like Memphis ribs, brisket, pulled pork, sausage and more, and sides include things like Jambalaya, collard greens, honey corn bread, potato salad, macaroni salad, baked beans, and coleslaw. Whidbey Coffee
Whidbey Coffee has been a favorite since 1989, and they have several locations on Whidbey Island and in the surrounding area. Whidbey Coffee’s menu features all of the espresso classic you’d expect (lattes, americanos, mochas, cappuccinos, etc.) but they also serve tea, chai, drip coffee, hot chocolate, steamers, Italian sodas, frappes, milkshakes, smoothies and more. Depending on the location you can also expect to find a great selection of sandwiches, salads, parfaits, pastries, sweet breads, etc. (Also, Whidbey Coffee’s sister company is Victrola Coffee Roasters, a staple of the Seattle coffee scene.)

Sugar Studio
Located in Oak Harbor on Whidbey Island, Sugar Studio prides itself in “Professional service. Fabulous treatments. Professional staff.” They offer a huge variety of services, including body hair removal using their sugaring process, facial waxing, facials, facial massage, hand treatments, scalp treatments, massage, Ashiatsu Bodywork, cupping, body scrubs, brow tinting, lash lifts, airbrush tanning, and more! (Yes, this really is a “one-stop shop”!)
In case you’re not familiar, according to StudioSugar.com, “Our sugaring technique extracts hair in its natural direction of growth” and the sugar paste that’s used is also natural and water soluble. Sugar Studio offers tons of great information on this process here in case you’re curious!
